Understanding Eligibility:

What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative designed to provide support and services to Australians living with disabilities. Launched in 2013, the NDIS aims to empower individuals with disabilities, enhance their independence, and improve their quality of life.

Are you, your client or your loved one eligible?

The NDIS outlines criteria that need to be met to be eligible for participation in the scheme. The scheme focuses on providing assistance to individuals who have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to participate in daily activities and requires ongoing support.

Key eligibility requirements include:

  • Age Criteria: The NDIS is available to individuals under the age of 65. For those over 65, other support services, such as the aged care system, might be more appropriate.

  • Residency: To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.

  • Disability Criteria: The NDIS defines disability as a permanent condition that substantially reduces an individual's ability to participate effectively in activities, communicate, or interact with others. The disability must be attributable to intellectual, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment.

  • Early Intervention: The NDIS also provides early intervention support for children under the age of 7 with developmental delays or disabilities. The early intervention aims to address potential challenges and enhance a child's development.

Understanding How To Get Access:

Once you have determined your eligibility for the NDIS, you can take a look at the following steps to access the service:

  • Contact the NDIS: Begin by reaching out to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), the organisation responsible for managing the NDIS. You can contact them via phone, email, or through their website.

  • Application: The NDIA will guide you through the application process, which includes providing relevant information about your disability, functional capacity, and support needs. It's crucial to gather medical reports, assessments, and any other supporting documents to strengthen your application.

  • Planning Meeting: If your application is accepted, you will be invited to a planning meeting. This meeting is an opportunity to discuss your goals and support needs and develop an individualised NDIS plan. It's essential to prepare for this meeting by identifying your aspirations, current challenges, and desired outcomes.

  • Plan Approval: After the planning meeting, the NDIA will assess your plan and determine the funding and support you will receive. Once approved, you will receive a formal NDIS plan outlining the funded supports and services.

  • Engage Service Providers: With an approved plan issued, you can now engage NDIS service providers to deliver the support outlined in your plan. These providers offer a range of services, including personal care, therapy, assistive technology, and more.

  • Review and Monitoring: Your disability and support needs may fluctuate over time. It's important to review your plan periodically to ensure it continues to meet your needs. The NDIA can assist in making any necessary adjustments or amendments to your plan.

The NDIS strives to provide services and support that will make a meaningful difference in your life or the life of your loved one with a disability.

If you feel you are eligible to become a participant of the NDIS, visit the NDIS website for more information, or feel free to contact the Innovate Rehab team, who will always be happy to guide you through the application process.
