Understanding Functional Capacity Assessments in the NDIS

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is an integral part of the NDIS process, as the information provided helps justify the level of support and funding you are eligible to receive.

What is an FCA?

A Functional Capacity Assessment is an evaluation used to assess a person's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social capabilities. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual's strengths and limitations in performing daily activities and help determine the appropriate support required to achieve their goals and live a fulfilling life.

The Role of FCA in the NDIS:

  • Individualised Support Plans: FCAs form the basis for creating individualised support plans tailored to your specific needs and aspirations. These plans outline the services and support that are essential to improving your quality of life and reaching your goals.

  • Funding Allocation: The results of the FCA directly influence the funding allocation you receive from the NDIS. By accurately assessing your functional capacity, the NDIS can ensure you get the right level of financial support.

  • Evidence-Based Decision Making: FCAs are rooted in evidence-based assessments, providing a clear picture of your capabilities and limitations. This information is invaluable for the NDIS in making informed decisions about your plan.

Who Conducts FCAs?

A common misconception is that FCAs are to be completed by occupational therapists exclusively. In fact, the NDIS recognises that FCAs are able to be completed by any qualified allied health professional who has the experience and competency to do so, e.g. a Physiotherapist, or Speech Pathologist.

Our tips for a Successful FCA:

  • Be Honest: When undergoing an FCA, it's essential to be honest about your abilities and challenges. Accurate information will ensure you receive the appropriate support.

  • Prepare for the Assessment: Familiarise yourself with the process and expectations of the assessment to ensure you are comfortable and can provide the necessary information.

  • Advocate for Yourself: If you have specific needs or goals, make them known during the assessment. This information will help shape your individualised support plan.

Functional Capacity Assessments are a cornerstone of the NDIS, ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the support they need to lead fulfilling lives. By assessing your functional capacity, these assessments provide a clear understanding of your abilities and limitations, enabling the NDIS to allocate funding and services that align with your goals and needs.
